Shirley C. Jones

Shirley C. Jones, age 80, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at her residence. She was born January 28, 1937, in Southampton, Virginia, daughter of the late Willie J.”Bubba” Porter and Annie Mae Porter. 

Shirley was retired from the City of Roanoke Rapids where she was a Dispatcher with the Police Department. 

She was a charter member of Lakeside Lutheran Church, Littleton, NC.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Chetty, Dr. Maradiaga, Frances Wood, Community Home Care and Hospice staff, and the Lakeside Lutheran Church family.

Shirley was preceded in death by husband, Robert “Hard Rock” Howard Jones.

She is survived by two daughters, Gwen Jones Matthews (Larry), Patsy Jones Harrison (Doug); son, Robert Graham Jones (Tammy); six grandchildren, Jessica Matthews, Ashley Matthews Hux(Craig), Justin Matthews(Robin), Travis Godsey(Ruth), Brittany Stallings and Spencer Stallings; eight great grandchildren, Linley Godsey, Abraham Howell, Hayden Hux, Aubrey Matthews, Harlow Hux, Caleb Godsey, Jackson Matthews, and Bethany Matthews; sister, Linda Moseley(Butch); many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, July 29, 2017, in the Chapel of Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service with Pastor Russell Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in new Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening, Friday, July 28, 2017 at the Funeral Home from 7:00 until 8:30, and at other times at 823 Halifax Street, Roanoke Rapids,NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lakeside Lutheran Church, 2427 Eaton Ferry Rd, Littleton,NC 27850.

Floyd Henry Cooke, Sr. of Roanoke Rapids passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017.

He was born in Roxboro, NC, to the late John Henry Cooke and Sarah (Sadie) Hawkins Jones Cooke.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Janet (Jackie) Felts Cooke and his second wife, Betty Lassiter Cooke.  

Floyd served his country in the US Army from 1954 to 1957 and also had a career as a welder/pipe fitter.  

He is survived by his sisters, Jean Cooke Morgan (Jim); Margaret Cooke Haithcock (Earl); his children, Kim Cooke King (Fiance, Carlton Ansley), Carol Cooke Garner (C.W, Jr.), Floyd Cooke, Jr. (Wendy Smith Cooke), David Cooke (Leigh Banty Cooke); his grandchildren, Jackie King Hernandez (Joe), Jessica King, Jason King (Emily Wood King), Floyd “Trey” Cooke III, Grady Cooke, Jack Cooke (Fiance, Cierra Livesay), Haley Cooke, Katy Cooke; step grandchildren, James “Jimmy” Smith, Jr., Britni Smith Long (Ronnie); great grandchildren, Taylor Brooks, Brooklyn Hernandez, Jackson Livesay, Annaleigh Cooke, Brantley Cooke; nephews, Dennis Parnell (Cheri Duncan Parnell), Steve Parnell (Regina Compton Parnell), Robert Little (Carol), and John Little.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Myra Hazelene Jones Medlin, 82, of Littleton, NC, passed away on Sunday July 30, 2017.

A native of Duplin County she was the daughter of the late Isaac Edmond and Jabez Mobley Jones and was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Louise Delantonas; her sisters Nisha J. Mohorn, Velma J. Shanklin; her brothers, Talmadge E. Jones, Osborne Jones, Dallas Jones, Carl Jones and Murdic Jones and her special Niece, Denis Hales.

Hazelene was a 1953 graduate of Aurelian Springs High School.

She worked at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company in Weldon, NC; Samarkan Manor in Eagle Springs, NC; and Garden Lake Estates in Wilmington, NC.

She was a member of Community Center Baptist Church in Halifax where she was active in the W.O.M., Sunday School and the choir, member of the Lake Gaston Ladies Club, an avid Golfer and a dedicated Housewife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Henry Medlin, of Littleton, NC; her children, Robert “Robbie” W. Medlin of Halifax, NC, Henry Dale Medlin of the home; her grandchildren, Tracy Glenney of San Antonio, TX, Stacy Shaw of Weldon, NC, Chrystal Medlin and Brandi Jones of Carolina Beach, NC, Cheryl Medlin and Keith Spettel of Charlotte, NC, Amberlin Medlin of Greenville, SC, her Great-grandchildren, Robert Jacob, Michael and Morgan Glenney, Lucas Medlin and Wyatt Shaw, her sisters, Susie J. Clizbe of Halifax, NC, Elenor J. Hales and her husband Robbie of Halifax, twin sister, Eudene J. Freuler and her husband Bill of Lake Gaston, NC, Opal J. Loflin and her husband Donald of Maryville, TN; her brother Forrest Jones and his wife, Ellen of Halifax, NC, and her many nieces and nephews and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Community Center Baptist Church in Halifax, NC with Dr. Jim Whitehead and Dr. Julian Mills officiating.

David Louis Cieslinski

David Louis Cieslinski, 72, affectionately known as “Ski”, died peacefully in his home Monday, July 31, 2017, with his loving partner of 26 years, Ann C. Harris, by his side.

Ski was born in Fisherville, MI on January 1, 1945, to the late Benjamin and Alice Cieslinski. After graduating high school, he served 7 plus years in the Air Force, ending with a tour of duty in Roanoke Rapids where he remained to raise his family. He owned a successful mobile home business before working with the Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, where he retired in 2007. In addition to his parents, Ski was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald, and his grandson, Jonathan.

In addition to Ann, his survivors left to cherish his memories are sisters, Janette Luptowski and Sister Maria Pauline Cieslinski; sons, David Cieslinski and wife, Jackie, Richard Cieslinski and Brian Cieslinski and fiancé, Geneva; daughter, Theresa Cieslinski; and the mother of his children, Gail Cieslinski. Also surviving are his step daughters, Laura Bolling, Melissa Grizzard and Joy Allen; 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. 

The family will remember Ski’s life at a visitation at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, Thursday, August 3, 2017, from 7-8:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held by Father Pius Wekesa at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 am with entombment to follow in the memorial garden.

Clarence “Mickey” Linwood Whitby, age 81, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Whitby was born in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Charlie Linwood Whitby and Clovene Overton Whitby. 

He was retired from Kapstone Kraft Paper Corporation, a member of Victory Baptist Church and a former member of The Virginia Laymen. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Gray Whitby, who died June 16, 2017.

Surviving are: a daughter, Kathy W. Love and her husband Bill of Roanoke Rapids, NC; two sons Charles L. Whitby of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Ronald J. Whitby and his wife Michelle, of Littleton, NC; a brother Joe G. Whitby and his wife Elaine of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a half- brother Luther Tanner and his wife Brenda of Roanoke Rapids, NC; seven grandchildren, Jason S. Whitby, Stacey Baker, Lewis Frye, Jessica Aiken, Justin Frye, Tabitha Love and Amanda Frye; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Baker, Chloe Matthews and Kyleigh Aiken.

The family will receive at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, Friday, August 4, 2017 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Funeral services will be held at Victory Baptist Church, Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Jeremy Kobernat and Pastor Rex Evans, officiating. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Shirley McLawhorn Lucas

Shirley McLawhorn Lucas, 81, of Roanoke Rapids died Wednesday August 9, 2017.

Shirley, a native of Pitt County, was the daughter of the late William Bruce and Louise Hite McLawhorn. She was also preceded in death by a brother William McLawhorn.

Shirley was a 1957 graduate of East Carolina University. She was a retired teacher with the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District. She was a member or ADK Sorority and First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Bob Lucas, their two sons, Steve Lucas and his wife Tara of Huntersville and Scott Lucas and his wife, Camilla of Belmont; her grandchildren, Evan, Emily, Adam and Lauren Lucas; her brother, Jimmy McLawhorn and his wife, Ann, of Fayetteville.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Corey Oliver officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Betty Jo Stanley Hayes, 84, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017 at her home.

Betty was born January 23, 1933 in Asco, WV to the late Walter Stanley and Ruth Melton Stanley.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Allen Hayes; her brother, Buddy McKenzie; her sisters, Patsy Marshall and Sandra Lucion.

She retired from Belk as Office Manager after 20 years of service. She was married to the love of her life, Jerry, for over fifty years. Known as “Nana” she dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a kind heart and will be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her daughters, Denise Gay Patterson and husband, Donald; Tina Hayes Poythress and husband, John; and Missy Hayes McKeel; sisters, Joan Hedrick, Carolyn Gregory and Sharon Peak and her husband Robert; her brother, Michael Stanley; her grandchildren, Kristopher Wayne Patterson, Michael Allen Patterson and wife, Caroline Lee Moncure-Patterson, Bradley Cole Poythress, Jessica Hayes Chard and her husband Brad, Jordan Marie Poythress and Emma Grace McKeel; her great-grandchildren, Brayden Allen Patterson, Andrew Michael Patterson, Guinevere Rhys Patterson and Anna Jayde Patterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 13, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Daniel West, Minister officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter Missy.

Joyce Wayne Davis Delbridge, 73, of Aurelian Springs Road, Halifax passed away Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Joyce was born January 10, 1944 to the late William Thomas Davis and Margaret Casper Davis. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ruth Parker and husband Kyle, John Thomas Davis and wife Pat, Dorothy Ambrose and husband Bobby, Robert Earl Davis, Augustine Hallingshead and husband Gene and Terry Richardson.

Joyce was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She loved cooking, working in the yard, her garden and her flowers.  She worked 26 years as a weaver with J. P. Stevens and Bibb Company and 18 years with Kennametal. Joyce enjoyed riding on the motorcycle with her husband. Joyce also went back to school at the age of 40 and got her G.E.D.

She is survived by her husband, Jodie Delbridge; her children, Cindy Biggles and husband Mitch, Ronald Todd, Shane Delbridge and Heather Delbridge and Larry; her grandchildren, Joshua Delbridge, Christian Delbridge, Meagan Patterson, Ricky Walden, Jr. and Wayne Todd, Jr.; her great-granddaughter, Adalyn Bisset; her sisters,Margaret Ann Horne and husband Russell, Patsy Simmons and Cathy Handsome and husband Henry and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held at 6:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation service and the family will receive friends following the service.  The family will receive other times at the home.

Peggy Bullock Bright, 67, of Jackson, NC, passed away on Monday, August 14, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late Leslie Wilson and Lois Opal Summerville Bullock.

Peggy was retired as an educator from West Martin Elementary School in Oak City, NC, where she taught her entire career.

Peggy is survived by her Sister, Toni Grimm and her husband Harry Lee Grimm Sr. of Las Vegas Nevada; her brother Larry Bullock and his wife, Sally of Jackson, NC; her four nieces, Lois Evans, Shasta Gandy, Brandy King and Sammie Moore; and her nephews, Lee Grimm, Travis Bullock and Ray Trevino.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Peggy’s life on Sunday August 20, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in Jackson Cemetery with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating.

Rudolph Smith, 79, died Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids.

Rudolph was born in Halifax County, November 25, 1937, to the late Ernest Edward and Sally Victoria Parker Smith. 

He enjoyed NASCAR. playing pool and was a long-time member of Little Country Baptist Church. 

In addition to his parents, Rudolph was preceded in death by brothers, James Smith, Benjamin Smith and William Smith; sisters, Ollie Mae Smith and Ernestine Faithful, and a grandchild, Charles T. Geiser, III.

Surviving are his sons, Steve Smith and Randy Smith, both of Spartanburg, SC; daughters, Gladys Debra Bishop and Lynn Gates, both of Spartanburg, SC; brother, Jesse Smith of Spartanburg, SC; sisters, Helen Wayne of West Virginia, Betsy Richardson of Warrenton and Barbara Ellis of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Michael Smith, Nottie Wood, Stacey Michelle Bishop, Lynn Powers, Joe Powers, Kenny Powers, Chrisy Bullock, William Baughan, Ashleigh Geiser and Nathan Geiser. Also surviving are 8 great grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, August 18, 2017, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 7-8:30 pm. 

Rev. James Jenkins will conduct funeral services Saturday, August 19, 2017, in the chapel at Hockaday beginning at 2:00 pm. 

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Wendy F. Byrum, 51, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017, in the afternoon at home among loved ones after a long battle against cancer.

Wendy left behind many family and friends to cherish her memories and mourn her loss, including her two children, Danielle and Bristol, two grandchildren, Cienna and Cyanne, two brothers, Daryl and Brian, her sister Lynn, a life partner Jonathan, her mother, Faye Dunlow and all of her school family and children as well.

Ms. Byrum’s  Mother will be carrying out a Memorial service at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services Chapel on Friday August 25th at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ricky Jordan officiating or family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life memorial where her ashes will be scattered with Wendy’s children and other loved one’s.

Mr. Roy Rogers Edmonds, age 75, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away, Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Wake-Med Hospital, Raleigh, NC.

Edmonds was born September 4, 1941 and was a realtor and the owner/operator of Roy Edmonds and Company.

Edmonds is survived by his wife of fifty-five years Dorothy O. Edmonds, a daughter Esther E. Mogensen of Knightdale, NC, a grandson Christian Douglass Mogensen II and wife Dale of Zebulon, NC, granddaughter Hunter Carol Mogensen also of Knightdale, NC, two great grandsons; Caiden Blayne and Mallory Douglass Mogensen also of Zebulon, NC, four brothers; Raymond Douglas Edmonds of Union Level, Jesse Wayne Edmonds of Kenbridge, Johnny Ray Edmonds of Alberta and Richard O. “Dickey“ Edmonds, Jr. of Boydton, three sisters; Carolyn E. Carter (Randy) of South Hill, Delores E. Tanner (Ronnie) of Alberta and Lucy E. Thomas also of South Hill. He was predeceased by a sister Dorothy E. Lynn.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. James “Junior” Vaughan, 84, of Rich Square, died Wednesday, August 23, 2017.

Junior was born in Halifax County to the late James Henry and Stella Barnes Vaughan.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters; Virginia Vaughan Bishop and Annie Vaughan, brothers; Randolph Vaughan, Henry Earl Vaughan, and Larry Wade Vincent.

Junior retired from Coca Cola after 40 years of service, earning the nickname “Coca Cola Man.” He and his wife ran a flea market for many years, and loved yard sales, fishing and hunting.

An avid storyteller, he loved to talk about his baseball days with his brothers and other family, fishing and hunting adventures, and stories in general about his life.

Junior is survived by his wife Sue Vaughan, two sons; Chris Vaughan and his wife Cristel of Roanoke Rapids and Jamie Vaughan of Wilmington. One daughter, April Vaughan McKee and her husband Steve of Nashville. Brothers; Shelby Vaughan and his wife Brenda of Rockingham NC, Wayne Vaughan and his wife Judy of Kelford NC, Ron Vincent and his wife Cecilia of Douglasville GA, and Bennie Ray Vincent and his wife Mary Lou of Ooltewah, TN.  Grandchildren Christina Vaughan, Jaci Vaughan, Allison McKee Askew, Alexis Vaughan, Logan Vaughan and Katie Bowman.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 26, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. at Wrenn, Clarke and Hagan Funeral and Cremation Chapel with Rev. Robert Rogers and Rev. Doug Spivey officiating.

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

Richard J. 'Dickey' Smith

Richard J. “Dickey” Smith, 71, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2017, at his home.

Dickey was born June 21, 1946, in Guilford County to the late Julian Hayes Smith and Arnie Mae Joyner Smith.  

He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Claude M. Inscoe and Lucille Tyson Inscoe; his sisters-in-law, Barbara Price Burton and Trilby Nadine Inscoe; his  brothers-in-law, Anthony Cecil Fox and Carey Morris Turman

Dickey moved to Roanoke Rapids when he was 12 years old and married his high school sweetheart when he was 20 years old.

His first job was in the weave room at J.P. Stevens, he then worked for Tom and Judge Shell. Afterwards he was plant manager at Uptegraff Transformer Plant and stayed on with Autoverter’s when they purchased the plant.

He later was the storeroom Manager at Georgia-Pacific in Skippers. Dickey also served 7 years in the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Phyllis Inscoe Smith; his daughter, Claudia Edmondson and her husband Brian; his sisters, Linda Fox and Patricia Turman; his nieces and nephews, Carey Turman, Tony Fox, Wade Fox, Lisa Landen, Mason Jay Price and Susan Ivey Price. All their wives, husbands and their children. He was also Papa to a special little girl, Summer Ann.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 26, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Sue Owens and Rev. Richard Hill officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:30 prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Military Honors.

Byron Duke Hoggard, 80, of Roanoke Rapids passed Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Our Community Hospital in Scotland Neck.

Duke was born August 24, 1937 in Halifax County to the late Johnny Thomas Hoggard and Mildred Shaw Hoggard. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Jean Hoggard.

Duke was a commercial automotive artist and he also served in the U. S. Army.

He is survived by his step-sons, William Earl Gray, Jr. and his wife Tammy of Chesapeake, VA, and Christopher Alexander Gray and his wife, Ashley of Roanoke Rapids; his sister, Velvie Dean Hoggard of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Brittany Gray Christy, Storm Gray, Chris Gray and Jordan Gray; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Sue Owens officiating. 

Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Steven Ray Pittman, 65, died Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at Signature Healthcare of Roanoke Rapids.

Steve was born in Halifax County, August 04, 1952, to the late William “Buck” Franklin and Betty Jean Rook Pittman. 

He was a good Christian man who loved the Lord, his grandchildren and his family. 

He also loved playing music. 

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his daughter, Shelby Renee Pittman Exum.

Surviving are his wife, Frances “Frankie” Pittman; son, Steven Kenneth “Kenny” Pittman and wife, Beth; step son, Jack Harrell and wife, Teresa, all of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Mitzi Cahoon and husband, Lee, of Gaston, and his grandchildren, Dylan Exum, Will Harrell, Ayden Ellis Pittman, Dustin Joe Maurice and Jackson Taylor.

Pastors Tony Smith and D.A. Leonard will conduct a celebration to remember Steve’s life Friday, September 01, 2017, in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 2:00 pm. 

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm and all other times at the home of Kenny and Beth Pittman, 205 Robinson Dr., Roanoke Rapids.

Dorothy Connell Bradley, 85, passed away late Sunday evening August 27, 2017 after a long illness.

Dorothy spent the last few weeks surrounded by family and friends at the Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg.

She was a native of Roanoke Rapids, where she graduated from RRHS in 1950. After living in Lynchburg, VA, for several years she returned to RR in 1972, where she went on to work for JP Stevens, WR Grace and approximately 18 years at Halifax Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna Mae Wheeler Connell and Luther Jackson Connell and her brother Lewis Ivery Connell.

Survivors include her two nephews, Chad Ames Connell and his wife, Ashley Ward Connell of Lanexa, VA , and William Tod Connell of Alexandria, VA. Three grand- nieces, McKenzie Leigh Connell, Olivia Claire Connell and Carleigh Allison Connell and two grand nephews, Tyler Wegner and Dylan Wegner, all of Lanexa, VA

Funeral services will be held at 3pm, Saturday, Sept 2nd at Wrenn Clarke & Hagan Chapel, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. 

Burial to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends starting at 1:30 prior to the service at the funeral home.
