Franklin Steven Lassiter

Mr. Franklin Steven Lassiter age 71, of Aulander, NC passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Lassiter was born July 15, 1945 in Bertie County, NC, the son of the late Clingy Lassiter Sr. and Mary Congleton Lassiter.
He was also predeceased by his wife Janice Lassiter and a sister, Emma Lassiter Dickerson.
Mr. Lassiter was a former member of the Aulander Rescue Squad and Aulander Fire Department. He was also a member of
the National Guard.
He is survived by his sister, Teresa Brinkley. His brother Clingy Lassiter Jr. and his wife Mandy. His nephews, Michael Lassiter,
Marty Stephenson. His niece Renee Lassiter Hoggard and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Greg
Hurdle officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Monday, December 12, 2016 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Rosalyn Smith Forsyth, 82, died at her home Monday, December 12, 2016.

Rosalyn was born in Franklin County, NC, December 17, 1933, to the late John Hazel Smith and Bertha Taylor Smith. She loved God, Church, Home and Family. In addition to her parents, Rosalyn was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie E. Forsyth; sister, Hazel Gilliam and her brothers, Curtis and Willis Smith.
Surviving are her children, Debra Forsyth Daniel, and husband, Steve, of Raleigh, Charles Richard Forsyth and wife, Cynthia Pittard of Louisburg, Cedric Scott Forsyth and wife, Ann, of Roanoke Rapids, and Jeff Forsyth of Raleigh; sister, Nancy Cooke and husband, Willis, of Rolesville; grandchildren, Brent Daniel, Kimberly Bender and husband, Will, Scott Forsyth and wife, Catherine, Cheryl Yoacham and husband, Chris and Andy Forsyth. Also, surviving are her great grandchildren, Joshua, Gail, Christian and Alicia Forsyth, Kaley and Cade Daniel, Forrest, Allison and Elizabeth Bender.
Rev. Rochele Bailey will conduct funeral services Thursday, December 15, 2016, at 2:00 at Smith United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 1:00 pm.

Andrew Jackson Kohn

Mr. Andrew Jackson Kohn age 96, passed away December 15, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Kohn was born June 18, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late William and Ella Kohn.
He was also predeceased by two brothers, Bob and William Kohn and good family friend Gerald Earley.
He served in the US Navy for which he was very proud. After service he received his real estate license and sold real estate. Then he went into the upholstery business upholstering vehicles, boat tops and performed work for the US Postal Service.
He is survived by Jeri Earley and family.
At Mr. Kohn's request, there will be no services at this time.

Hazel Cobb Taylor, 90, of Roanoke Rapids, died Thursday December 15, 2016.

Hazel, a native of Halifax County, was the daughter of the late Olyo Russell and Roberta Spence Cobb. She was also preceded in death by her dearly loved husband and companion of 63 years Joseph Taylor, her daughter, Judy Taylor, her sisters, Elizabeth Pilley Wood, Gertrude Fox, Edna Gay and Laura Harris.

Hazel was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She was a homemaker until her children were older. She served as the secretary and friend to the community of the Weldon Methodist United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Later she was the caretaker to her husband after his health declined.

Hazel loved God, family, and all of God’s people. The victory is won and the healing has come.

The wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and sometimes “saint” has gone home to be another “Angel in God’s Army”, and of course, to see her beloved, Joe.

She is survived by her daughters, Martha Taylor Bradshaw and her husband, Charles of Benson and Sarah Taylor of Raleigh, four beloved grand children, Bo Christenbury and his wife, Stacy, Kate Christenbury, Christie Whitby-Jones and her husband, Russell and Jenny Drummond and her husband, Bryan; four beloved great grandchildren Kellie Whitby-Jones, Aven Christenbury, Faith and Luke Drummond; her brothers, Clifton Cobb and his wife, Jo Ann of Halifax, Russell Cobb and his wife, Margaret of Hickory and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services will be held Saturday December 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church 1405 Bolling Road Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870

James Ronald 'Ron' Boone

James Ronald “Ron” Boone, 83, of Henrico passed away at his home, Sunday December 18, 2016.

“Ron” was born to the late Ruth Shepard and Robert Thomas Boone, Sr. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Brickey; and his brother, Robert T. Boone, Jr.
“Ron” was a 1953 graduate of Appalachia High School.
He served his country in the U.S. Army and then Air Force Reserves.
He retired from Bell Atlantic Phone Company after 34 years as a supervisor.
“Ron” had a spirit of serving others his entire life. He was a member of the Lake Gaston Lions Club where he was a past President.
He worked with many projects over the years for the visually impaired.
He volunteered with the Newell Farms Eastern Bluebird Rescue Group for over 15 years.
“Ron” is survived by his wife Elsie M. Boone; his five daughters, Laura Jean Sisk of Clarksville, TN, Donna Marie Boone of Largo, FL, Teresa Anne Boone of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Sarah Lynn Parris and her husband James of Titusville, FL and Wanda Sue Daniels and her husband Jamie of Pinellas Park, FL; his two sons, Ronald Allen Boone of Treasure Island, FL and Michael Evin Boone and his wife Tammy of Springfield, VA; his nine grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson, Sierra Wilson, Bobby Wilson, Steven Boone, Lexi Boone, Ashlyn Willis, Quincy Daniels, Haley Daniels and Aliyah Daniels; and his two sisters Peggy Baughn of Jacksonville, FL and Julia Young of Baton Rouge, LA.
The family will receive friends Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 23, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. with Father Pius Wakesa officiating.
The family will have a reception at the Lake Gaston Lions Club following the services at 139 Stanley Road Henrico, NC.

Faye Deane Erwin Hux, 76, died Saturday, December 24, 2016, at her home.

Mrs. Hux was born in Roanoke Rapids, April 1, 1940, and is the daughter of the late Crawford S. and Cota P. Erwin. She was a 1958 Roanoke Rapids High School graduate and a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She worked at JP Stevens and Bibb for 38 years, and later, at Walmart as a front end cashier for 11 years. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hux was preceded in death by her sons, Kerry A. Hux and Reagan R. Hux.
Surviving are her husband, the love of her life, Robert L. Hux, of the home, Stuart Hux of the home, and Curt Hux and wife, Rosita, of Springfield, VA; sisters, Benisha E. Clary and Iris E. Faucett of Roanoke Rapids, and Gail E. Fuller and husband, Hugh, of Cary; 8 grandchildren, Michael Hux and wife Andi, Britteny Faye Hux, Timothy Hux, Kerry Nicole Lewter, Jennifer Hux, Fabio Hux, Christian Hux and Gage Hux; great grandchildren, Colby Hux, Logan Hux, and after February, Riley Nicole Hux. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Jimmy King will conduct a service of remembrance at Good News Baptist Church Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends, after the service, at Good News Baptist where lunch will be served. Friends are also welcomed at the home of Iris E. Faucett, 721 E. 12th Street, Roanoke Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Geraldine Ferguson Brantley

Mrs. Geraldine Ferguson Brantley age 88, formerly of 231 Church Road, Ahoskie, NC passed on peacefully to be with God on December 24, 2016 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation in Windsor, NC.

Mrs. Brantley was born on October 22, 1928 in the Trap community near Colerain and was the daughter of the late Arthur Ferguson and Ella Vinson Ferguson.

In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her husband of fifty three years, Robert H. Brantley and grandson, Lt. Nicholas Brantley.
Except for a brief time as a teacher’s aide, she spent her adult life as a homemaker, wife and mother. A faithful member of Center Grove Baptist Church, she served as children’s Sunday school teacher for over two decades, active member of the Women’s Missionary Union and choir member.
Her family will remember her as a good Southern cook who always made gatherings and holidays special. She took great pride in maintaining a clean home and neat yard.
Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Hale and husband Tommy of Aulander, NC; three sons, Doug Brantley and wife Kay of Askewville, NC, Keith Brantley and wife Joyce of Ahoskie, NC and Randy Brantley of Concord, NC. Five grandsons, Colonel Anthony R. Hale and wife Stacy of Fayetteville, NC, Robert Brantley of Askewville, NC, Perry Hale and wife Kelly of Nags head, NC, Joseph Brantley of Stokes, NC and Jonathan Brantley of Askewville, NC. Four great grandchildren, Christopher Brantley of Stokes, NC, Blythe Hale and Tanner Brinkley of Nags Head, NC and Davis Sikes of Greenville, NC. Her sisters, Dorothy Brown of Ahoskie, NC, Joyce Leary and husband Thomas of Ahoskie, NC and Shirley White of Ahoskie, NC. She also love her two “adopted” grandchildren, Anna Overton Hodges and Brian Overton of Greenville, NC.
A graveside service will be held Friday, December 30, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC with Rev. Daniel Mullens and Rev. Bob Skeens officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Center Grove Baptist Church, 826 Center Grove Road, Ahoskie, NC 27910, Lt. Nicholas Brantley Basketball Scholarship, Ridgecroft School, Ahoskie, NC 27910 or to a charity of your choice.

Pastor Maurice Reed Wheat

Pastor Maurice Reed Wheat, 80, of Roanoke Rapids was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Monday, December 26, 2016 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Pastor Wheat was born on September 13, 1936 in Bedford County, VA to the late Justin Carl Wheat and Alice Hawkins Wheat. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Carl Wheat.

Pastor Wheat served his country as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 – 1956. He attended Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem from 1959 – 1964 where he received a Bachelor of Religious Education. He founded Calvary Baptist Church in Rural Hall, NC and was their Pastor from 1968 – 1972. In June of 1972 he went to work for the US Postal Service in Roanoke Rapids where he spent 24 years. He received an Honorary Doctorate in 2003 from Bread of Life International Bible Correspondence Institute. He also taught the Bible Class at Cornerstone Christian School from 2005 – 2009. Pastor Wheat also served the congregation of Central Baptist Church for 44 years and served as a minister for 57 years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Isa Helen Keene Wheat; his children, David and Suzanne Wheat, Sharon and Graham Taylor, Pansy and Jimmy Olsen and Joy and Wesley Pepper; his grandchildren, Emily Wheat, Jamie Olsen, Bud and Chera Olsen, Benjamin and Karin Wheat, Amber McCoy, Charlie McCoy, Phillip Wheat, Justin and Anna Olsen, Joshua and Ericka Olsen, Jordan Olsen, Jodie Olsen, Jay Olsen and Wesley Pepper; his great-grandchildren, Brandi Bedgood, Juddson Olsen, Chloe McCoy, Amelia Wheat, Emma Olsen and Haley Olsen.

A Celebration Service for God’s Faithfull Servant will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with TAPS being performed by his grandson, Wesley Pepper. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 – 12:30 P.M.

The family would like to give special thanks to Kevin Cox, The Staff at Duke University Medical Center, The Cardiology Department at Duke and Community Home Health and Hospice.

Claudeline Pullen Lewis of Enfield passed away on Monday, December 26, 2016.

She was the daughter of the late Frances Parker and James “Sam” Henry Lewis. Claudeline was preceded in death by her brother, J. W. Lewis and her sister Jessie Belle Lewis.

She was a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church. Claudeline graduated from Aurelian Springs High School and later graduated from UNC Greensboro Women’s College. She also received her Master’s in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She then moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1962 where she worked for UNC Chapel Hill until her retirement.

Claudeline is survived by her Nephew, James Grier Lewis and his wife Carol of Beaufort, NC, Josh Parker Lewis and his wife Laurel of Chapel Hill, NC; and her Great-grand niece, Jordan Britt Lewis.


A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. Susan Joyce officiating.

A Reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

Wayne King Drewery, 74, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Wayne was born in Halifax County, March 3, 1942, to the late Caudie Wiggins and Lavelle King Drewery. He loved hunting and watching Nascar racing. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his sister, Janet Drewery Seymour and his lifelong partner, Elaine Hunt.

Surviving are his daughter, Amy L. Drewery Hunt of the home; brother, Caudie Martin Drewery, Sr. and wife, Inez, of Gumberry, NC and his sister, Yvonne Drewery Coyne and husband, Joseph, of Roanoke Rapids. Also surviving are 10 nieces, 2 nephews, 17 great nieces, 7 great nephews, 12 great-great nieces, and 11 great-great nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Services from 6-8 pm. Frederick Hill will conduct a graveside service at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 pm.

Austin was born July 23, 1962 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of Austin Clay and Barbara Jenkins Clay.
Survivors include: wife, Janet S. Clay; daughter Deana Clay Roberts and husband Tim; daughter Brittney Clay and significant other, Jason; son Joe Hernandez, Jr. and wife Jackie; and son Waylon Hernandez; three grandsons, Nicolas, Ryan and Colin; two granddaughters, Taylor and Brooklyn; sister, Sandra Jean Pike and husband Curtis, brother, Albert “Danny” Clay; brother Ricky E. Clay; brother Billy “Lobo” Clay and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Annie Virginia Hasty Martin Peede age 81, of Conway, NC slept slowly and peacefully out of this life Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

Mrs. Peede was born June 16, 1935, the daughter of the late Floyd Hasty Sr. and Leasie Davis Hasty. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Roy Earl Martin, her second husband James Earl Peede and two sisters, Frances Warrington and Carolyn Hasty.

Mrs. Peede loved sports, especially Nascar and the Super Bowl.

She is survived by her children, Wanda Flythe (Joseph), Teresa Martin, Becky Barrow (Jimmy), Roy Martin Jr. (Julie), and Quin Martin (Lori). Her step son, James Ellis “Buddy” Cheeks (Ruth). One sister, Rosa Leigh Nally and three brothers, Floyd Hasty Jr., C.T. Hasty and Marshall Hasty. Nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Baptist Church, Jackson, NC with Rev. Warren Heitzenrater officiating. Burial will follow at Conway Cemetery, Conway, NC.

The family will receive friends at the home of Wanda and Joseph Flythe, Thursday from 6:00 until 8:30 PM.

Hazel Elizabeth Garrish Brown, 90, of Roanoke Rapids, died Thursday December 29, 2016, with her loving family by her side.

Hazel a native of Hall County, Georgia, was the daughter of the late William B. and Coral Belle Chastine Garrish.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah B. Hawkins of Roanoke Rapids, Brenda B. Johnson and her husband, Howard M. of Greenville, SC and Glenda Crutchlow and her husband, John of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters Mae Campbell and Ruby Butler both of Lula, Ga., four grandchildren Deborah Lynn Hawkins of Durham, Kevin Hawkins and his wife, Michelle of Roanoke Rapids, Ryan Johnson and his wife, Courtney of Greenville, SC and Shannon Kimberly Kenney and her husband, Chuck of Easley, SC and five great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday January 1, 2017 at 3 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr Lavelle Waters officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

He was born in 1941 to the late Aryman Gerald Miller, Sr. and Mary Foster Miller. “Jerry” was preceded in death by his sister, Judith “Judy” Miller Vaughan.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Miller; his two step-daughters, Mary-Catherine Roberts of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Sarah-Elizabeth Roberts of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his step-son, Christopher Sanders and his wife Lacy of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his step-granddaughter, London Sanders; his brother-in-law, Otis “Nat” Vaughan of Weldon; his aunt, Dora Foster Gibbs of Holly Springs, NC; his two nieces, Donna V. Brennan of Elm City, NC, Traci V. Storey and her husband, Tra of Jackson, NC; his nephew, Michael Vaughan and his wife Stephanie of Courtland, VA; and his great-nieces, Amanda Brennan and Grace Storey and his great-nephews Franklin Brennan, Jr. and Eric Vaughan.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 2, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Southampton Memorial Park Cemetery in Franklin, Va., with Rev. Ben Duffey officiating.

Clara Louise Oakley Barfield

Clara Louise Oakley Barfield, 93, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Signature Healthcare in Roanoke Rapids.

She was born in Greenville, North Carolina to the late Charles Thomas Oakley, Sr. and Clara Letha Nobles Oakley.
She was also preceded in death by her husband Dr. Paul Hood Barfield, Sr. and her siblings Charles Thomas Oakley, Jr., Frances D. Freeman, and William Thomas “Bill” Oakley.
She is survived by her children Dr. Paul Hood Barfield, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids and partner Tony B. Hall and Paula Barfield Burton and husband Dr. Ashby Jeffries Burton III and grandson Ashby Jeffries Burton IV of Littleton. She is also survived by her sister Sybil O. Jordan of Raleigh and many nieces, nephews, and special friends that she loved.
The family is also grateful for a special caregiver, Lucille Pearson.
Mrs. Barfield was a graduate of Weldon High School and Park View Hospital School of Nursing. She was an active member of Chockoyotte Baptist Church, Roanoke Rapids Shrinettes, and Eastern Star of North Carolina.
The Rev. Michael O. Currin will conduct a celebration of life service on Thursday, January 5th at 2:00 P.M. at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids. Cassie Smith Dalton, 95 of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2016.

She was born in Pittsylvania County, VA, to the late Lonie Francis and Geter Coleman Smith. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dempsey Eugene Dalton; her sisters, Mildred S. Davis and Iris S. Easley.

Cassie was a Member of Rosemary United Methodist Church where she also served as the Church Secretary.

She is survived by her son, Mark C. Dalton of Lexington, SC.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Steve McElroy officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral & Cremation Services of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mary Driggers Price

Mary Driggers Price, 52, passed away Monday, January 2, 2017 at Vidant Health Center in Greenville, NC.

Mary was born in Waldorf, MD, March 29, 1964, to the late Willard Eldon and Betty Ann Meadows Driggers. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher James Price and Justin Scott Price. She loved her children and her seven grandchildren more than anything in the world. She will be remembered for her kind heart and friendly demeanor.
Surviving are her significant other, Tony Love; brother, Sammy McKeel and wife, Katherine; sister Barbara Driggers; daughter, Krista Ann Gray and husband, John Andrew; son, Jonathan Price and wife, Kimberly and daughter-in-law, Lindsay Elizabeth Sherrod.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jonathan and Kimberly Price in Whitakers, NC.
The family will have a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made to the Mary Price Fund, 507 HWY 158, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Richard Linwood Carter

Richard Linwood Carter, 86, died Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Scotland Manor Healthcare Center in Scotland Neck.

Richard was born in Halifax County, June 27, 1930, to the late Enoch Marvin and Lorena Dickens Carter. He worked in the paper mills in Roanoke Rapids for many years and was a veteran of the United States Army. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Edith R. Carter and two brothers, Jacob and James Owen Carter.

Surviving are his son, Merv Carter and wife, Miya, of Greensboro, NC; three nieces, Catherine Metzger of Wake Forest, NC, Sarah Wester of Henderson, NC and Paula Martin of Altharetta, GA; one nephew, James O.Carter, Jr. of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Margaret Carter of Goldsboro; granddaughter, Lisa Vivian Johnson and husband, Jarrod, and great granddaughter, Fiona Johnson, all of Knightdale, NC.

Dr. Julian Mills will conduct a graveside service at Crestview Memorial Cemetery beginning at 1:00 pm Thursday, January 5, 2017. The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, prior to the graveside service, from 11:30am to 12:30pm.

Mrs. Virginia Martin Gilliam age 87, formerly of Milwaukee passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Mrs. Gilliam was born March 25, 1929 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Ravie Martin and RubyAskew Martin. She was also predeceased by her husband Clarence P. Gilliam, a son, Dixie Paul Gilliam and a sister Evelyn Strickland.
Mrs. Gilliam never met a stranger. If she would see someone she didn't know she would say, "Hi, I am  Virginia from North Carolina."
She is survived by a sister, Mona Martin Rose, a brother, Marvin Martin, a grandson, Billy Gilliam and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to Celebrate Virginia's Life will be held, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at  Bethany United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 PM prior to services.
Massey funeral Home in Jackson, NC is handling arrangements.
