Ruth Bernard Hart Hedgepeth

Ruth Bernard Hart Hedgepeth, 85, passed away on January 3, 2017.

Ruth was born in La Grange, NC on March 14, 1931 and was one of eight children of the late Mary Louvenia Aycock Hart and William Gardner Hart.

Ruth married the late Rupert Lee Hedgepeth on August 18, 1949, moved to Northern Virginia and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor.

She loved to cook, bake, crochet, help others and collect anything with angels.

Ruth is survived by her three children Patricia Wright and partner Jack Wilson of Amelia Island, FL; David Hedgepeth of Roanoke Rapids, NC; and Mary Simpkins and her husband Ken of Springfield, VA; five grandchildren, Crystal (Jon), Brandon (Lela), Ashley, Josh and Kyle; and six great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Kaitie, Levi, Kadyn, Rayne and Jack. She is also survived by her siblings Reba Blanton (Jack) and Grace Grant along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Lee Hedgepeth, her son-in-law, Thomas Wright, and her siblings Emma Alphin, William Hart, Henry Hart, Shelton Hart and Dorothy Phillips.
Ruth and Rupert moved back to Halifax, NC in August 2010 where they spent their final years with family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to Margaret Lassiter, Mary Mason and Hazel Whitley for their loving care for Ruth and her family during this time.
Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements where the family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30pm Thursday, January 5, 2017.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6, 2017 at 12:00pm (noon) at Community Center Baptist Church in Halifax, NC where she was a member. Dr. W. Jim Whitehead will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Hedgepeth Family Cemetery next to the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to go to Community Center Baptist Church, 2360 Ridgecrest Road, Halifax, NC 27839 or Johns Hopkins for the benefit of epilepsy research as Ruth and one of her granddaughters have both struggled with epilepsy.

Mrs. Bertha Dorothy "Dotty" Fink Ronk, age 84, of Seaboard, NC,  passed away Monday, January 2, 2017.

Mrs. Ronk was born August 23, 1932, in Troy, NY, the daughter of the late Joseph Miller and Bertha Drosky Miller.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Emory E. Ronk, a son James Fink and a sister, Frances Miller.

She is survived by a son, Joseph Fink, a sister, Rita Weaver (Joseph), two nephews, Clifford and Scott Bart and a granddaughter Nichole Fink.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday, January 9, 2017, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.
A Graveside Service will be held Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke, VA at 2:00 PM.

Virgie Carroll King

Virgie Carroll King, 88, of White Plains, VA, peacefully answered God’s call to eternal rest on Thursday, January 5, 2017, in her home surrounded by family.

Mrs. King was born, July 26, 1928, in Brunswick County to the late Harvey C. Carroll and Mamie Hall Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Harry Edward King, and her brother, Kelly Carroll.
Virgie leaves behind to cherish her memory, three daughters, Jean Singletary of Fort Washington, MD, Judy Bell of Louisburg and Renee Wilson of Littleton; six grandchildren, Henry Singletary, Jr., Lavonne Nelson, Tiffany Briscoe, Natasha Belch, Jennifer Shelton and Daniel Stroud; 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She also leaves behind a sister, Cleto Parrott and brother, Hugh Carroll.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 6-8 pm. Revs. John Alford and Mark Wethington will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Clara Elizabeth Taylor Walker

Clara Elizabeth Taylor Walker, 89, died Friday, January 6, 2017, in Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Clara was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, December 29, 1927, to the late Willie and Dollie Mavis Hinton Taylor. She loved serving the Lord and was a lifelong member of Lakeview Baptist and Victory Baptist Churches. She had a talent for sewing and was considered a “professional seamstress” and she also loved baking. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Columbus “W.C.” Walker; brothers, Isaac and Marvin Taylor; sister, Marie Whichard, and her grandson, Cameron Osborne.
Surviving are her daughters, Naomi W. Smith and husband, Melvin, of Roanoke Rapids, and Torie W. Osborne and husband, Robert, of Halifax; granddaughter, Erin Smith; special friends, Debbie and Michael Morris, Becky and Hubert Allen, Allie Faye Ivey, Adele Fox and Johnnie and Margaret Lassiter. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Avalene Cullom and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 6-8 pm. Pastor Jeremy Kobernat will conduct funeral services at Victory Baptist Church Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Tommy Lee Winebrenner, 80, of Lake Gaston died Wednesday January 11, 2017.

Tommy a native of Wolf Lake, Indiana was the son of the late Heber and Marcile Marker Winebrenner.
He served in the United States Marine Corp Reserve. He was retired from the Federal Government working in the House of Repersentives as the Minority door keeper. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, was on the Lake Gaston Weed Council, loved to fish, golf and was a very active member of Calvary United Methodist Church and his Community.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Barbara Berry Winebrenner, his daughter Pam W. Gentry of Roxboro, his son, Mark Winebrenner and his wife, Holly of Virginia Beach Va. four grand children Kyle Gentry, Zach Gentry, Erin Winebrenner, Megan Winebrenner; his sister Sandra W. Wooten and his brother, Phillip Winebrenner and his wife, Susan of Helotes, Tex.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday January 14, 2017 at 2 P.M. at Calvary United Methodist Church in Littleton with Rev. Stan Lewis officiating.

Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends after the service in the Church fellowship hall.

Arrangements are being handled by Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids.

Hattie Mae Bogart 83, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017, in Virginia Beach, Va.

Hattie was born in Roanoke Rapids on October 22, 1933 and worked for the Daily Herald and 2nd Street Amusement Park in Roanoke Rapids for several years.

After moving to Virginia Beach she was owner and operator of Bogie’s Bar in Norfolk, Va. and retired from Tidewater Transit.

She was an avid card player and loved her soap operas.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Fanny Francis Turner, her father, William C. Lewis, her brother, William Lewis, and her aunt, Betty Jane Turner.

She is survived by her son, Jerry L. Bogart and his wife, Diane of Virginia Beach, Va., four grandchildren, Terri M. Bogart, of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary E. Bogart Reynolds of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Jerry L. Bogart of Virginia Beach, Va., Michael L. Bogart of Virginia Beach, Va., three great grandchildren, Jason A. Bogart, Joshua L. Reynolds, and Ryan L. Reynolds, a special niece, Sylvia Jenkins and husband Wayne of Roanoke Rapids, NC., and two special friends, Dottie Sloan of Norfolk, Va. and Elia (Gerry L.) Letizia of Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 14 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. and Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 14 in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with the Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.

Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery.

Dorothy Mae Meadows Curling,  96, of Roanoke Rapids died Thursday January 12, 2017.

Dorothy, a native of Halifax County, was the daughter of the Harvey Leon and Edith Toler Meadows. She is also preceded in death by a son George O. Roberts a great- grandson, Jilead Cates, three sisters and four brothers.

Dorothy was retired from J.P. Stevens and was a member Victory Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Harold L. Curling, her daughter, Cheryl R. Jordan and Donald “Bubba” Baird of Roanoke Rapids, son R. Wayne Roberts and his wife, Angela of Winston-Salem; daughter-in-law Carolyn Roberts of Roanoke Rapids; three stepsons, Harold Curling, Jr. and his wife, Rebecca of Pagosa, Col., Robert Alton Curling and Colleen of New Orleans, La., Warren Keith Curling and Robbie of Baja, Miss., five grandchildren Phillip Roberts of Raleigh, Dr Sonya Cates and her husband, Jeffery of Winston-Salem, Kelly Roberts and his wife, Karon of Raleigh, Marty Roberts and his wife Teresa of Oceanside, Cal., and Nicky Roberts and his wife, Karan of Knightdale; ten great grandchildren Samantha Cates, Susanna Cates, Jesse David Cates, Luaran, Kelsey, Cassidy, Maegan, Joseph, Karson and Makenna Roberts and seven step-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held Sunday January 15, 2017 at 2:30 P.M. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating.

The Family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 until service time at the Funeral Home.

Mr. George Washington Cooke

Mr. George Washington Cooke, age 94, of Enfield, NC passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017.

Mr. Cooke was born April 7, 1922 in Nash county, NC the son of the late Willie Otis Cooke and Lincey Griffin Cooke. He was also predeceased by his son, George Anthony “Tony” Cooke.
Mr. Cooke was a veteran of the US Army and served his country proudly during World War II. He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Hunter Cooke and his daughter, Sarah Denise Cooke.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Turkey Branch Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 PM prior to the service.

Warren Elmer Exline, 85, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2017 in his home.

Mr. Exline was born December 23, 1931 in Duquesne, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his wife; Agnes R Exline; his daughter Karen Morgan; his son Warren Edward Exline; his twin grandsons Jared Eugene and Jason Scott Sutton (Mitchell); his great-grandson Jaxon Warren Duncan; and his brother Ronald Exline.

He is survived by his children: Charles Bramble; Robert Exline and his wife Kathy Conklin; Nanci Mitchell; Judi Exline-Porch and her husband Cleaton F Porch "Frankie"; Christina Exline Dickens; his former son-in-law Joseph Alston Dickens Jr; his daughter-in-law Kathy Exline; his brother George Exline and his wife Arlene Exline.

His grandchildren: Chuck Bramble and his wife Kim; Jessica Adelman and her husband Steve; Jessica Exline; Nick Mitchell; Jennifer Morgan; Danielle Morgan; Brooke Hudson and her husband Brent; Jason Exline and his wife Erin; Kayla Exline; Chris Porch and his wife Victoria; Katelynn Porch; Dakota Dickens; and Ryan Dickens.

His great-grandchildren: Matthew Dehn; Kylie Mitchell; Neve Mitchell; Kaitlyn Betts; MacKenzie Betts; Macie Duncan; Jr Duncan; Jordan Duncan; Janelle Duncan; London Exline; Levi Hudson; and Adalyn Hudson.

His great-great grandchild: Alexa Roedel.

He served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War. He then worked on the railroad before receiving his calling into the ministry. During his ministry, Warren and his family did missionary work in Thailand, and he served many congregations over his lifetime along with working as a carpenter to help support his family.

The memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at First Christian Church in Emporia, Virginia. Refreshments will be served afterwards by the ladies of the church. He will be buried next to his wife at Old Paths Church in Georgetown, Delaware in the spring; arrangements will be made at a later date.

Mrs. Rachel Elizabeth Johnson Bryant, 78, of Maggie Valley, NC (formerly Rich Square) , died Friday, January, 13, 2017 at 4:13 PM at Haywood County Regional Medical Center in Clyde, NC.

She was surrounded by her husband of 58 years, along with her 4 children, her extended children, grandchildren and lifelong friends Donnie and Nancy Daughtry and Kelly Daughtry Manning.
Mrs. Bryant was born March 1, 1938, in the Creeksville Community of Northampton County, the daughter of the late Willie Edward Johnson and Vivian Weston Johnson. She was also preceded by her unborn child, and her four sisters, Ola Mae Barrett, Pauline Martin, Gertrude Vinson and Mabel Johnson.
Glenn and Rachel Bryant were married at Creeksville Baptist Church and planned to return to Creeksville as their final resting place.
Survivors include her husband Glenn Bryant of Maggie Valley, NC; her four children, Phyllis Bryant Martin, Rob (Robby) Bryant, his fiancé' Terri, Phillip Bryant and his wife Amy, Wendy Bryant Cleaveland, her proclaimed daughter Kelly Daughtry Manning, her 7 grandchildren Bradley Martin and his wife, Stephan Bryant and his wife, Heather Bryant, Christen Bryant, Jeremy Bryant, Brandon Hall and his wife and Braxton Hall and his wife; her 6 great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Martin, Brayleigh Martin, Kaleb Hall, Charlie Hall, Emma Hall, Lily Hall; many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, of which is handling the arrangements.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Creeksville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Andy Sloan and her grandson Bradley Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Lucille Outland 'Duck' Drew

Mrs. Lucille Outland “Duck” Drew age 88 of Aulander, NC passed away Monday, January 16, 2017 at Creekside Care and Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Drew was born December 23, 1928 in Kelford, NC the daughter of the late Wayland Perry Outland and Irene Parker Outland. She was also predeceased by her husband James E. Drew, a daughter Gloria L. Drew, brother-in-law, John A Drew Jr. and his wife Vera, two sister-in-laws, Rose Outland and Janice Outland.
She was a member of Aulander Baptist Church and worked in manufacturing for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Edna Hill and her husband Steve “Tee” Hill of Ahoskie, NC. Her grandson, Brian Nelms and his wife Amanda of Aulander, NC. Two great grandchildren, Brianna Nelms and Logan Nelms. Her brothers, Rufus Outland of Portsmouth, VA and William “Bill” Outland of Washington, NC.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home Wednesday, January 18, 2017 from 6:30 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Margaret Overton Harrison,

beloved Mother, Grandmother, and friend, died Friday, January 13, 2017, at UNC-Hospitals in Chapel Hill. She was 91.

Mrs Harrison was born in Oxford to the late Joseph Overton and Bertha Emory Overton.  She was a retired homemaker and loved keeping children in her home.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Benjamin Harrison.

 

She is survived by four sons; Robert Baggett and his wife Joyce of Roanoke Rapids, Paul Anthony Harrison and his friend Carol of Clayton, Douglas Harrison and his wife Patsy of Roanoke Rapids, and Harold Harrison and his wife Anne of Roanoke Rapids, one daughter Carol H. West and her husband Kent of Littleton.  Nine Grandchildren; David and Jeffrey Baggett, Aaron, Adam, and Hillary Harrison, Travis Godsey, Brandon and Rachel Harrison, Carly and Harrison West.

 

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 17th, at Crestview Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Matthew Smith and Rev. Mike O. Currin officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:00 P.M. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Shirley Diane Carlisle Fisher transitioned from this life on January 16th, 2017, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and loving sister.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Horace Ray Fisher Sr., her parents James Acey and Mary Finch "Pig" Carlisle, and her brother, Daniel Hosten Carlisle.

Diane was born in 1939 in Roanoke Rapids and graduated from William R. Davie High School in 1958. She met and married Horace Fisher in 1959 and started a family. She had three children (Ray, Craig and Michael) and worked for J.P. Stevens as a weaver until she retired in 1991 after the death of her husband. She adopted her first two grandchildren, Lacey and Josh, and raised them as a single parent. Diane loved cruising to Mexico and Hawaii. She was an active member of the Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness church for more than 40 years and loved her church family.

She leaves behind many loved ones and friends including her children: Ray Fisher and his husband, James Brave, of West Sacramento, CA; Craig Fisher of Pamlico, NC; Michael Fisher and partner, Angela Jenkins, of Roanoke Rapids; Her grandchildren: Lacey Fisher of Roanoke Rapids; Joshua Fisher and his partner, Ardella Delamora, of Roanoke Rapids; and Haley-Brooke Fisher of Roanoke Rapids; Her sisters, Sandra Tomlinson of Roanoke Rapids who was also her primary caregiver and best friend; and Doris Marie Carlisle of Skippers, VA; And her brothers: James Carlisle of Roanoke Rapids; Walter "Butch" Carlisle and wife, Beverly. She also leaves behind with a plethora of nieces, nephews, and their families along with so many dear friends in North Carolina and California who will mourn her loss.

Services will be held at the Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church at 2267 W 10th St. in Roanoke Rapids on Friday, January 20th at 2pm followed by a graveside service at Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will also receive visitors on Thursday, January 19th, from 7 to 8:30pm at Hockaday Funeral Home at 507 US 158 in Roanoke Rapids.

Donnie David Shearin, Sr. 78, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at home.

Donnie was born August 23, 1938 in Halifax County to the late Ivey Pittard Shearin and Geneva Newsome Shearin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ann Shearin; his son, Donnie Shearin, Jr.; his grandson, Dustin Urbahns.

Donnie loved his family, loved working on chainsaws. He was a hard worker who loved a challenge, He made many friends during his career working on chainsaws. Donnie also took great care of his mother after his father died.

He is survived by his children, Deborah Urbahns, Donna Dunlow and her husband Keith, Todd Shearin and Michael Shearin and his wife Nicole all of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Audrey Dunlow, Austin and
Kinley Shearin, David Mooney and David Taylor; his brother, Dennis Terry Shearin and his partner Glenn Custer of Amhurst, VA; his sister, Joan Ivey and her husband Milton of Roanoke Rapids; his nephew, Jeffrey Dixon; his great nieces, Kelly and Caitlyn Dixon.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Cedarwood Cemetery with Bane Angles, Minister officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the home of his daughter, Donna Dunlow. Arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

James Oliver “Jimmy” Nelms, Jr 57 of Roanoke Rapids died Sunday January 15, 2017.

Jimmy a native of Halifax County was the son of the late James Oliver Nelms, Sr. and Jean Bailey Nelms. He was also preceded in death by a brother Eddie Nelms.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Nelms and his son, James Cody Nelms both of South Hill, Va. his sisters, Debbie N. Walls of Roanoke Rapids and Sharon N. Oliver and her husband, Chuck of Roanoke Rapids, brother Wade Nelms of Newport, NC, his grandson that was so special to his heart Acelyn, special friend Sue Adams of Raleigh and Several Nieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held Thursday at 6 P.M. in the Chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Wade Nelms and Rev. Steve Formo officiating.

The Family will receive friends after the service at the Funeral Home and other times at the Home Place.

Mr. Terry E. Woods, age 85, of Conway, NC passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mr. Woods was born December 4, 1931 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late John Woods and Elizabeth Ellerbe Woods. He was also predeceased by his brothers, John Woods Jr., Hugh Woods and Charles Woods. Also a son-in-law, Philip Evans.

He was a member Zion United Methodist Church, an Air Force Veteran and retired from Hercules in Franklin, VA.

He is survived by his wife Essie Lassiter Garris Woods. His children, Elizabeth “Bet” Woods Haddock and her husband David, Claudie Ray Woods and his wife Wanda, Nancy Woods Evans, Teresa Woods Jones and her husband Christopher. A step son, Reed Garris and his wife Sharon. His grandchildren, Justin Wayland Haddock (Amanda), Garrett Ray Woods, Courtney Evans Carrouth (Adam), Zachary Philip Evans, Megan Rose Norwood, Christy Grace Jones, Maggie White Newsome (Tim). Two great grandchildren, Anna Susan Haddock and Audrey Brooke Haddock.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 21, 2017 at  2:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Lassiter Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday, January 20, 2017 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

James Henry Peede, Sr., 76, died at his home Saturday, January 21, 2017.

James was born in Northampton County, May 20, 1940, to the late Celia Vera Peede Deaton.

He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, and loved painting.

In addition to his mother, James was preceded in death by his step father, Sherman Deaton and his son, Thomas Peede.

Surviving are his wife, Lula Miles Peede of the home; sons, James H. Peede, Jr. and Sherman Miles Peede, both of Roanoke Rapids; daughters, Terry Robinson of Roanoke Rapids, and Marie Cox and husband, Lewis, of Garysburg; brother, Robert “Bobby” Gums and wife, Nancy, of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Timmy Robinson, Jr., Jeffrey Robinson, Suzanne Holt, Collette Davis and Emily Cox; great grandchildren, Trey Robinson, Liam Robinson, Brody Holt and Carleigh Holt. Also surviving, is his faithful dog and buddy, Brandy.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Tuesday, January 24, 2017, from 6-8 pm. Revs. Randy Martin and Joe Hall will conduct a graveside service Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 11:00 am in Cedarwood Cemetery.
